By-Product of flour manufacture, Wheat Feed is highly digestible, but variable in quality. It is one of the safest feeds available. It represents about 20% of the weight of the wheat crop being processed. Typically 86% dry matter, with an ME of 11.5 MJ/Kg DM, and 17.5% protein.

Dried Distillers Grains

There are three types of Dried Distillers Grains. Barley, Wheat and Maize. All of these cereal grains contain starch which can be fermented into alchohol.

Barley Distiller Grains are a by-product of malt whiskey manufacture, typically 90% dry matter and an ME of 12.7MJ/Kg DM and 26% protein.

Wheat Distillers Grain are a by-product of indistrial alchohol production. The alchohol produced from wheat distilling generally has no taste, and can be used to manufacture various different alchoholic beverages, including Gin and Vodka. The dried grains are typically 90% dry matter, 13.7 MJ/Kg ME and have a protein content of 34%.

Maize Distillers Grains are not currently produced in the UK, but can be a useful ingredient in beef diets. They are higher in oil than most distillers at 11%, and this oil will have a negative effect on butterfat in Dairy diets. They are 90% dry matter, 14.8MJ/Kg DM and 28% protein.

High-Energy Maize Meal

Available from various sources within the UK. It is important to determine how much oil is contained in this by-product before it is put to use. The lower the oil the better for dairy diets. However if oil levels are low, starch levels need to be high. Typically Maize Screenings are around 90-% dry matter, 14.5 MJ/Kg ME and 9.5% protein., hoever starch can vary from 41% to 70% (!) and oil can vary from 2% to 14%.

Biscuit/Bakery/Confectionary By-Product

There are many different forms of these meals. It is worth checking the proportion of starch, sugar and oil before purchase. Lakeland Scottish Feeds & Services have sourced three key producers who offer consistency within the remit of the bakery by-product blenders.

It is not appropriate to issue one particular analysis since the product range can vary dramatically.

British Sugar have produced this necessary by-product for many years. It is probably the best known rumen-friendly feed-stuff. A highly digestible fibre source, typically analysing at 89% dry matter, 12.5 MJ/Kg ME and 11% protein.

Pea & Bean Meal

This by-product is very limited in it's availability, however it contains around 17% fibre with a digestibility of around 94%. It also contains a very useful amino acid profile. A safe product, Pea & Bean Meal can be used at up to 25% inclusion in most ruminant diets.

Typically 90% dry matter, 19% protein and 13.5 MJ/Kg ME.
